AN INTRODUCTION TO
MAGNETS
Magnets are fun to play with. Magnets
are piece of metal or rock with an invisible power to attract special kinds of metal.
That power is called a force. Magnetism is the force that makes a magnet stick
to your refrigerator. Magnetism is at work all around you. Magnetism works over
a distance. This means that a magnet does not have to be touching an object to
pull it.
WHAT IS A MAGNET
Magnet is a material that has the
property to attract certain materials. It has an invisible field around it,
which is called the Magnetic field. A magnet has two poles.
TYPES OF MAGNETS
1. NATURAL MAGNETS : They are
found in nature and are weak magnets.
2. ARTIFICIAL MAGNETS: They are made by man by using different techniques and are strong magnets.

PROPERTIES OF MAGNETS
- A magnet has two ends called Poles, one of which is called a North pole while the other is called a south pole.
- The north pole of a magnet attracts the south pole of a second magnet, while the north pole of one magnet repels the other magnet’s North pole.
- Like poles repel, unlike poles attract.
- A magnet creates an invisible area of magnetism all around it called a Magnetic field.
- If you cut a bar magnet in half, you get two brand new, smaller magnets, each with its own north and south pole.

USES OF MAGNETS
1. Magnets
are used in speakers that convert electricity to sound
2. Magnets
are used to close refrigerator doors.
3. A compass
shows direction
4. Doctors
use Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanning to study problems
In human body.
5. Magnets
are used to lift Iron Objects, to separate Iron fillings from other
Mixtures.
